Groupama 4

The Race:

Sliding in just behind Camper in the final leg into Galway, Ireland, in the closest contest in the history of the race to that date, Team Groupama won the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race. Frank Cammas, skipper of the yacht Groupama 4, was the first French skipper to bring their team to the top of the podium since Lionel Péan skippered L’Esprit d’Equipe to victory in 1985-86. 

The Challenges: 

Team Groupama and the Juan K designed yacht encountered a series of challenges and technical difficulties throughout their Round the World adventure in this edition of this epic race.  The team pulled into Auckland after discovering a crack in the hull off the coast of New Zealand to then have Groupama 4 dismasted off the coast of South America on the next leg from New Zealand. The team was able to jury rig a sail to crawl to the finish in Itajai, Brazil; that came with much determination and certainly a change in strategy in completing the overall race.  You can see video footage from the dismasting and read the team’s story of determination here.

Where the Yacht is Today:

Groupama 4 continued its legacy as Giacomo racing in the South Pacific, winning overall honors in the 2016 Sydney Hobart Race.  Today former Groupama 4 goes by Wizard winning ocean races such as the Newport- Bermuda, Transatlantic, Fastnet, and Caribbean 600, where we have seen Volvo Ocean Race veterans Charlie Enright, Mark Towill, Rob Greenhalgh, Will Oxley and original winning Groupama 4 crew, Phil Harmer, onboard.
